Headless presentation decisions

Status: Selected architecture direction; runtime integration pending | Last reviewed: 2026-10-15

Use the OpenAI Decisions API to select Headless presentation behavior, component composition and placement. TrueServe supplies eligible alternatives, applies the selected plan and owns the data, action authority and call state.

This replaces two model responsibilities: the archived behavior classifier and the core agent's open-ended choice of components/layout. It does not replace the agents conducting conversations or completing tasks. The current ClearConnect review remains an authored preview; this document does not claim an API-backed runtime is deployed.

Existing mechanism and replacement boundary

The archived source was inspected at 98d0de2e3a3ea82c0fd9baa36ad9c9e598aec822, the parent of the Headless retirement. The archive is evidence for the architecture, not a running service.

Existing responsibility Evidence New owner
Choose chat, quiet, reframe or unfold and an optional target surface Archived apps/headless-runtime/app/classifier.py; one Bedrock text-generation call and JSON parsing Decisions selects an eligible presentation plan carrying the behavior and target
Pick component names from the attached catalogue Archived prompt_compose.py::compose_component_palette and core render tools Candidate builder uses the published catalogue; Decisions selects a composition
Suggest region, order and span Archived effector.py::RenderRequest and surfaces.py::normalize_layout Selected plan supplies legal placement; deterministic validation enforces it
Persist and render the canvas Archived surfaces.py: canvas registry, render envelope and atomic batch TrueServe retains this responsibility
Populate the opening view without waiting for a model Archived baseline.py Host renders a prepared or cached briefing immediately, then evaluates updates
Select current demo examples Current apps/ai-manager/scripts/clearconnect-headless/review.tsx: fixed arrangements and authored prompt matching Remains replay logic; a future live mode consumes the presentation controller

The retired classifier only ran on typed messages. The replacement is event-driven: workspace entry, task progress, completed conversation, document arrival, patient escalation and explicit inspection requests can all affect presentation without Maya asking for a refresh.

Responsibilities

  1. State assembler: build a tenant-authorized snapshot of work, conversation and call state, verified results, current surfaces, user focus, input in progress, viewport class and the triggering event. Include a state revision and stable case, task, conversation and surface identities.
  2. Candidate builder: produce a small set of valid presentation plans from available component instances and placement rules. Include a keep-current alternative. Candidate instances refer to real data bindings; a component name alone is insufficient when several patients use the same component.
  3. Decisions adapter: ask which eligible plan best fits the context. Store the decision ID, selected plan, confidence and option probabilities.
  4. Plan validator and committer: recheck permissions, component versions, data availability, current state revision, pinned controls and placement. Apply the selected changes atomically through the existing surface contract.
  5. Content and action layer: agents or data adapters supply component props and explanatory text. Tool handlers execute authorized actions and report outcomes. Decisions does neither of these jobs.

The adapter belongs on the server. No OpenAI credentials go into the Headless browser bundle. A runtime configuration should reference an existing tenant-scoped OpenAI integration, rather than introduce a second credential store or a caller-supplied upstream URL.

Select a coherent plan

Use a choice question over candidate plan IDs. Each plan binds together:

  • Behavior: chat, quiet, unfold or reframe.
  • Target surface and authorized subject identities.
  • Components to create, preserve, update, expand or remove.
  • Legal region, ordering and span for each affected surface.
  • The snapshot revision and component/catalogue versions.

This is not a choice between seven hardcoded demo screens. Candidates are assembled for the current event and available data using reusable composition rules. New published components can participate when their presentation metadata and data bindings are available.

A plan choice avoids independently selecting a behavior, component set and location that cannot legally coexist. If choosing a second result depends on the first, make the second request after that answer. The official API guidance only recommends batching independent questions over shared evidence.

Predicate questions can estimate whether an optional surface is relevant. Score questions can prioritize candidate work against a defined rubric. Use them where they improve selection; do not add a model call to every deterministic task-state update.

Behavior and placement

Behavior Contract ClearConnect example
chat Reply in the conversation area and preserve the canvas Maya asks a general question while a provider call continues
quiet Update one known surface without rearranging the workspace The provider answers; update the existing AIOutreach status and transcript
unfold Expand evidence related to a known surface Maya asks why Renee is waiting; reveal EvidenceAnswer beneath the current focus
reframe Apply an atomic composition change with stable identities Maya asks to supervise the provider call; place AIOutreach in main and preserve commitments in rail

The initial briefing is a host-triggered event, not a required typed question. DayBriefing can occupy hero, PriorityFocus main, and UpcomingCare rail. Later, a completed routine chat can quietly update AIServiceUpdate or the briefing. A requested human handoff can introduce ConversationArrival while retaining the active call controls.

Regions remain hero, main, rail and full; order and span stay explicit. Opening the original document uses the host's document reader and authorized attachment resolution. The API does not invent a document URL or a new layout primitive.

Current review.json regions describe review defaults. Runtime candidate generation also needs an explicit per-component allowed-region/variant contract. For example, do not squeeze the full AIOutreach control surface into rail unless a compact variant has been implemented and verified.

Example request

The API chooses an identifier, not a generated JSON layout. The server retains the candidate definitions and data bindings.

POST this body to /v1/decisions. Resolve the named answer by its name, handle refusal explicitly, and accept only a plan ID in this request's candidate set. confidence is distinct from the selected option's probability; record both without treating either as proof that underlying work succeeded.

Stability and operational truth

  • Explicit controls bypass semantic classification. A Take over call click invokes the authorized handoff handler directly. The UI shows pending until the media result confirms the new owner. Decisions may choose how to present that result, but cannot perform or confirm the transfer.
  • Protect active work. Pin active call controls, pending acceptance and unsaved input. An unrelated completed chat must not displace them.
  • Mandatory attention is deterministic. A verified human request or operational failure must remain visible even if Decisions refuses, times out or returns low confidence.
  • Ground completion. A provider promise, document receipt, extraction and validation are separate states. Rendering ActionReceipt does not manufacture a successful result.
  • Reject stale plans. Recheck the snapshot revision before commit. Coalesce repeated progress events; do not replay every partial transcript through a full reframe. Use stable surface IDs and preserve local UI state.
  • Fallback without a blank screen. Preserve the last valid composition, apply mandatory state updates and keep the prepared briefing available. Never restore an already-invalid action or an unavailable patient binding.
  • Calibrate thresholds. Use labelled Headless examples to choose confidence margins and reframe thresholds. Record disagreement and fallback rates alongside measured end-to-end latency; do not assume an API speed claim equals a rendering latency guarantee.

Integration sequence

  1. Define the presentation snapshot, component presentation metadata and candidate-plan contract independently of the OpenAI transport.
  2. Implement the server adapter using the tenant integration. Verify Decisions availability for the actual account with synthetic context; availability has not been tested by this architecture assessment.
  3. Evaluate the same representative events against existing selection and Decisions without changing the visible UI. Cover briefing, evidence, provider progress, takeover, routine completion, escalation and document arrival, including overlapping cases and an active user edit.
  4. Enable Decisions for the new Headless runtime. Have the core agent populate the selected components rather than independently choosing a competing layout. Validate every render path at the same commit boundary.
  5. Record accepted plans and results for Scene replay. Keep the recorded demonstration reproducible while evaluating the live decision path separately.

Acceptance requires permitted components only, valid data bindings and regions, no lost controls or user input, no cross-case evidence, no stale commits, proactive entry without a prompt, correct refusal/error fallback, and truthful task/call/document state. Report task success and UI stability separately from API answer confidence.

OpenAI contract checked

The official Decisions guide was fetched on October 15, 2026. It documents:

  • Dedicated POST /v1/decisions, currently public beta.
  • gpt-6-luna as the currently supported model.
  • Typed predicate, choice and score answers, with refusal handling.
  • Responses Structured Outputs for generating schema-shaped content and function calling for requesting tool execution.
  • JavaScript SDK 7.30.0 or later for its Decisions examples.

The architecture uses these typed choices. It does not assume Decisions can generate arbitrary component props, free-form reasoning or executable actions.
